The racial democracy in the thought of Guerreiro Ramos: a balance of commentators

Resumo: The objective of this article is to carry out a critical assessment of the interpretations about the meaning, place, and function of the concept of racial democracy in the thinking of sociologist Alberto Guerreiro Ramos. Based on the critical survey of commentators (Marcos Chor Maio, Antonio Sérgio Alfredo Guimarães, Muryatan Santana Barbosa and Luiz Augusto Campos), we intend to show that the concept of racial democracy was appropriated, by the militant black intellectuals of the 1940s and 1950s, of academic intellectuality and transformed into a) a political and social project to integrate black populations into the emergent competitive social structure; and b) in treatment of colonized subjectivities based on the aesthetics of blackness. Finally, we will summarize the continuities and ruptures between racial democracy according to its traditional interpreters and according to the black militants of the 1940s and 1950s, especially Guerreiro Ramos.

Partiendo del levantamiento crítico de los comentaristas (Marcos Chor Maio, Antonio Sérgio Alfredo Guimarães, Muryatan Santana Barbosa y Luiz Augusto Campos), se busca mostrar que el concepto de democracia racial fue apropiado de la intelectualidad académica por los intelectuales militantes negros de los años 1940 y 1950 y transformado en: a) un proyecto político y social de integración de las poblaciones negras a la estructura social competitiva en emergencia; y b) en una terapéutica de las subjetividades colonizadas a partir de la estética de la negritud. Por fin, será hecha una síntesis de las continuidades y rupturas entre la democracia racial según sus intérpretes tradicionales y conforme los militantes negros de los años de 1940 y 1950, sobre todo en la obra de Guerreiro Ramos.O objetivo deste artigo é o de realizar um balanço crítico das interpretações acerca do significado, do lugar e da função do conceito de democracia racial no pensamento do sociólogo Alberto Guerreiro Ramos. Partindo do levantamento crítico de alguns comentadores (Marcos Chor Maio, Antonio Sérgio Alfredo Guimarães, Muryatan Santana Barbosa e Luiz Augusto Campos), pretendemos mostrar que o conceito de democracia racial foi apropriado da intelectualidade acadêmica pelos intelectuais militantes negros dos anos de 1940 e 1950 e transformado em: a) um projeto político e social de integração das populações negras à estrutura social competitiva em emergência; e b) numa terapêutica das subjetividades colonizadas a partir da estética da negritude.
