The Brazilian Army Promotions Law of 1850: the professionalization of the officer corps and the Military School

Resumo: The Army Promotion Law of 1850 is considered by the specialized literature as the first attempt to professionalize the Brazilian Army officer corps - still in the nineteenth century. It should be remembered that until 1850, the promotion system did not follow a set of minimum requirements. The promotions law set criteria, and indicated the passage through the then Military School as obligatory for some Army weapons. Thus, the article aims to approach the 1850 promotions law in a broad perspective. This perspective sees the law as part of a set of reforms undertaken by conservatives during the 1840s and 1850s. It also seeks to analyze the relationship between law and changes in the Military School.

Debe recordarse que hasta 1850, el sistema de promoción no siguió un conjunto de requisitos mínimos. La ley de promociones estableció criterios e indicó que el paso por la entonces Escuela Militar era obligatorio para algunas armas del Ejército. Por lo tanto, el artículo tiene como objetivo abordar la ley de promociones de 1850 en una perspectiva amplia. Esta perspectiva considera la ley como parte de un conjunto de reformas emprendidas por los conservadores durante las décadas de 1840 y 1850. También busca analizar la relación entre la ley y los cambios en la Escuela Militar.A lei de promoções do Exército de 1850 é considerada, pela literatura especializada, como a primeira tentativa de profissionalizar o corpo de oficiais do Exército brasileiro – ainda no século XIX. Cabe lembrar que, até 1850, o sistema de promoções não seguia um conjunto de requisitos mínimos. A lei de promoções estabeleceu critérios, e indicou a passagem pela então Escola Militar como obrigatoriedade para algumas armas do Exército. Assim, o artigo objetiva abordar a lei de promoções de 1850 em uma perspectiva ampla. Perspectiva essa que vê a lei como integrante de um conjunto de reformas empreendidas pelos conservadores durante as décadas de 1840 e 1850.
