Africa in historiography and the history of Anthropology: reflections on “African nature” and epistemological proposals

Resumo: The production of knowledge about Africa, with the methodology of what has been called “scientific rigor”, is confused with the development of human sciences in Europe and the United States between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. As a production of human knowledge, these studies are also confused with the events of their time that shaped not only the experiences of these scientists, but also the expectations about themselves and their objects - in this case, the populations of the African continent. Therefore, the objective of this article is to understand, in the development of these sciences, the discursive practices that demarcated the supposed “African nature”.

Como producción del conocimiento humano, estos estudios también se confunden con los eventos de su tiempo que dieron forma no solo a las experiencias de estos científicos, sino también a las expectativas sobre ellos mismos y sus objetos, en este caso, las poblaciones del continente africano. Por tanto, el objetivo de este artículo es comprender, en el desarrollo de estas ciencias, las prácticas discursivas que demarcaron la supuesta “naturaleza africana”.A produção de conhecimento sobre África, com a metodologia daquilo que se convencionou chamar “rigor científico”, se confunde com o desenvolvimento das ciências humanas na Europa e nos Estados Unidos entre os finais do século XIX e início do século XX. Enquanto produção de conhecimento humano esses estudos também se confundem com os acontecimentos de sua época que moldavam não só as experiências desses cientistas, como também as expectativas em torno si mesmos e de seus objetos – no caso, as populações do continente africano.
