Resumo: From time to time, the Kalapalo and other upper Xingu people build special structures for their chiefs: large decorated houses for living chiefs, and special graves for deceased nobles - also conceived as their "houses". In this article I analyze how these structures keep a series of analogies with the chiefs' body model, trying to show how houses, graves and noble bodies aim, at different scales, a duality between humanity / consanguinity and animality / affinity. Based on a dialogue with Lévi-Strauss' formulations about the House, I argue that the Xinguan leadership is characterized by the synthesis of principles of unity and antagonism, whose objectification is a necessary part of the movement by which the Xingu groups differ and identify themselves in the regional system, providing the basis for the kinship process.

Universidade Estadual de Campinas2013-12-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionTextoTextoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/otherapplication/pdfhttps://econtents.bc.unicamp.br/inpec/index.php/tematicas/article/view/1147710.20396/tematicas.v21i42.11477Tematicas; v. 21 n. 42 (2013): Casas; 73-113Tematicas; Vol. 21 No. 42 (2013): Casas; 73-113Tematicas; Vol. 21 Núm. 42 (2013): Casas; 73-1132595-315Xreponame:Temáticas (Campinas.
