Resumo: | From time to time, the Kalapalo and other upper Xingu people build special structures for their chiefs: large decorated houses for living chiefs, and special graves for deceased nobles - also conceived as their "houses". In this article I analyze how these structures keep a series of analogies with the chiefs' body model, trying to show how houses, graves and noble bodies aim, at different scales, a duality between humanity / consanguinity and animality / affinity. Based on a dialogue with Lévi-Strauss' formulations about the House, I argue that the Xinguan leadership is characterized by the synthesis of principles of unity and antagonism, whose objectification is a necessary part of the movement by which the Xingu groups differ and identify themselves in the regional system, providing the basis for the kinship process. |
