Profiles, modalities of action and mobilization repertoires of foreign clerics in Maranhão

Resumo: In this article, we analyze historical and social constraints on the militant activity of foreign clerics who worked in the State of Maranhão during the 1970s and 1980s. Fundamentally inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's analytical model, we examine the social properties, cultural resources and positions of a collection of agents who occupy prominent positions as authorized spokespersons for “causes” considered legitimate. In this sense, on the one hand, we seek to demonstrate the assets held by the priests covered, the intervention dynamics and the mobilization repertoires triggered. On the other hand, we intend to demonstrate the persistence of amalgamations between social domains¸ mainly religious, political-militants and intellectuals in this regional setting.

Inspirados fundamentalmente en el modelo analítico de Pierre Bourdieu, examinamos las propiedades sociales, los recursos culturales y las posiciones de un conjunto de agentes que ocupan posiciones destacadas como portavoces autorizados de “causas” consideradas legítimas. En este sentido, buscamos, por un lado, demostrar los activos que poseen los sacerdotes examinados, las dinámicas de intervención y los repertorios de movilización activados. Por otro lado, pretendemos demostrar la persistencia de amalgamas entre dominios sociales, especialmente el religioso, político-militantes e intelectuales en esta configuración regional.Neste artigo, analisamos condicionantes históricos e sociais de engajamento militante de clérigos estrangeiros que atuaram no Estado do Maranhão durante as décadas de 1970 e 1980. Inspirados fundamentalmente no modelo analítico de Pierre Bourdieu, examinamos as propriedades sociais, os recursos culturais e as tomadas de posição de uma coleção de agentes que ocupam posições de destaque como porta-vozes autorizados de “causas” consideradas legítimas. Nesse sentido, procuramos, por um lado, identificar os trunfos detidos pelos sacerdotes abrangidos, as dinâmicas de intervenção e os repertórios de mobilização acionados.
