The (litlle) hands that worked the land: children's life and memories in the rural periurban of Buenos Aires (Argentina, 1950-1960)

The present study aims to contribute to the reconstruction and characterization of those children that lived in peri-urban productive spaces in Buenos Aires (Argentina) in the period spanning the decades of 1950-1960. That is to say, children whose lives were marked by a lifestyle of “field” and with productive insertion in the family business, but, at the same time, with the possibility of access to goods, services and practices of urban origin. To address the issue, two late agricultural colonies formed in the rural contours near the federal capital of Argentina and the provincial capital of Buenos Aires in the mid-twentieth century during the Peronist period (1946-1955) are taken as case studies. The hypothesis is that the children structured the family domestic economy from work that was not marginal. At the same time, they nurtured social life based on their particular practices and needs. In this way, the intention is to indicate the importance of children in peri-urban areas, in a period of full deployment and productive consolidation of these.
