Feet on the ground and head in the clouds: theoretical and empirical outlines of contemporary mysticism

Resumo: The article proposes a sociological interpretation of a set of qualitative data on trivial magic and religious phenomena in a Brazilian city. The data were gathered through the concept of modern mysticism, that goes by the Max Weber’s classic concept. Besides, the article takes notice of some organizational patterns in mystical settings. These settings provide means to access other worlds, as well as inner selves. They are well adapted to modern urban life acting like businesses under the shadow of dominant religions.

A perspectiva adotada procurou juntar os dados através de uma reconceituação de misticismo contemporâneo que explora algumas possibilidades inferidas da conceituação weberiana e procurou também discernir padrões organizacionais no conjunto de atividades que os dados revelam. A interpretação resultante indica que o misticismo prospera atualmente através de uma rede social de pequenas agências representantes de uma miríade de outros mundos imanentes e transcendentes, e que elas atuam empresarialmente à sombra das religiões dominantes.O trabalho é um exercício de interpretação sociológica de um conjunto de dados qualitativos sobre fenômenos mágico-religiosos corriqueiros em uma grande cidade brasileira.
