A investigação tem como objetivos principais: (i) avançar na compreensão e discussão do que realmente caracteriza um estado mental de segunda ordem, (ii) e de como este nível de operação mental pode vir a se relacionar com a linguagem. Dentre os estados mentais de segunda ordem, trabalhamos, especificamente, com a compreensão de dois deles: ignorância e crença falsa. Com o suporte da Teoria Gerativa (TG), a hipótese a ser investigada é se a linguagem desempenha um papel central na atribuição de estados mentais de segunda ordem (DE VILLIERS, 2000; 2005; COULL, LEEKAM e BENNETT, 2006). Nos desenvolvimentos recentes da TG, o Programa Minimalista traz à tona a interação da faculdade da linguagem com os outros sistemas cognitivos e com tudo aquilo que configura a arquitetura da mente/cérebro (CHOMSKY, 1998). É a partir desta perspectiva que iremos explorar a relação entre linguagem e ToM. Metodologicamente, elaboramos três tipos de atividades experimentais, com diferentes desenhos e características que modificam a tarefa clássica proposta em Perner e Wimmer (1985) para segunda ordem, que foram realizadas com um grupo controle de adultos e um grupo experimental de crianças de 4 a 7 anos, período de aquisição de linguagem, sendo ambos os grupos falantes nativos do português brasileiro. Em resumo, os resultados mostraram que: as crianças brasileiras testadas compreendem o estado mental de ignorância de segunda ordem a partir dos 4 anos de idade, e compreendem o estado mental de crença falsa de segunda ordem a partir dos 5 anos de idade; a variável idade foi a única que observamos ter um efeito estatisticamente significativo para as respostas dos grupos testados; é possível dizer que há uma relação entre os estados mentais de segunda ordem porém, essa relação não é observada igualmente para todas as faixas etárias do grupo experimental e nem para todas as histórias que compõem a tarefa que testa esse aspecto; o desenho experimental com as características de ausência de estímulos linguísticos na narração das histórias e opção de seleção de imagens demonstraram produzir um efeito de facilitação no desempenho das crianças testadas. Os resultados aqui reportados acompanham os resultados que têm sido obtidos por pesquisas com o PB e com outras línguas para o nível de segunda ordemAbstract: This thesis addresses the relation between language and the cognitive ability dubbed Theory of Mind - henceforth ToM (PREMACK and WOODRUFF, 1978). Our main aims are: (i) to advance the understanding and the discussion about what really characterizes a second-order mental state, (ii) and how this level of mental operation can relate to language. Among the second order mental states, we work specifically with the understanding of two of them: ignorance and false belief. With the support of the Generative Theory (GT), the hypothesis to be investigated is whether language plays a central role in the attribution of second order mental states (DE VILLIERS, 2000, 2005; COULL, LEEKAM and BENNETT, 2006). On recent developments of GT, the Minimalist Program, brings about the interaction of the faculty of language with other cognitive systems and with everything that sets up the architecture of the mind / brain (CHOMSKY, 1998). It is from this perspective that we will explore the relation between language and ToM. Methodologically, we elaborated three types of experimental activities, with different designs and characteristics that modify the classic task proposed in Perner and Wimmer (1985) for second order, which were tested with a control group of adults and an experimental group of children from 4 to 7 years of age, both groups being Brazilian Portuguese native speakers. In summary, the results showed that: the Brazilian children tested understand the second-order mental state of ignorance from age 4 and understand the mental state of false second-order belief from age 5; age was the only variable that we observed to have a statistically significant effect for the responses of the groups tested; it is possible to say that a relation between the second order mental states of ignorance and false belief was observed, however, it was not equally observed for all the age groups nor for all the stories that composed the task; results obtained with a task of image selection designed without linguistic stimuli showed a facilitating effect on the children¿s performance.
