Resumo: The objective of this work is to present the crucial dialog between the city and the street - bearing in mind its symbolic value for urban design - making explicit the configuration of the road route as an instrument for the formation of cities. Based on the assumption that the streets are a prominent role and influence of social relations in various representations of urban life, the paradigmatic cases of European and North American urbanism were chosen, through bibliographic review, which formed urban models for development of Brazilian cities. In a historical-panoramic way, this paper explored the understanding of the street in the cities of London and Paris, between the 17th and 19th centuries, following the experience of the street in the cities of New York, Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles during the 20th century.
