Activism, performativity : and bodies in alliance on the streets

Recent studies invoke the term performance referring to political manifestations held in public spaces that considerably transform traditional forms of protests. The purpose of this article is to discuss aspects of the literature in this regard, as the performance is considered here as a revealing notion about the symbolic and cultural character identified in a recent cycle of urban activism in Brazilian metropolis. The term is approached from a theoretical-empirical angle. It starts with studies on the symbolic and cultural facets of political manifestations in Charles Tilly and Judith Butler. Then, we try to address a brief discussion about urban collectives that appeared on the slums of Rio de Janeiro between 2011 and 2015, whose demands involved a better sharing of the benefits of urbanization and the reaffirmation of the public character of the spaces and their full enjoyment. It is hoped that this discussion will help to understand possible advances and limitations in the face of the power of performative activism as a questioning action of the urbanism.
