Resumo: The mega events have become a strong strategy for the neoliberal politics, supported by a project of city restructuration that serves the business interests. The Olympic Games of Barcelona, in 1992, were a symbolic mark: the city reformulated all its urban morphology, becoming a “Olympic Model” and a direct influence over Rio de Janeiro and its process of transformation for the Games of 2016. This article debates the legality and impacts over the right to housing of citizens that suffered with the removals. With a qualitative approach, documents, and official reports, as well as dossiers from popular committees, were analyzed. We identified expropriation processes used to carry out both events for the sake of the private business interests but justified with the need of a sports project.

Universidade Estadual de Campinas2021-05-24info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionTextoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/otherapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.sbu.unicamp.br/ojs/index.php/rua/article/view/866572810.20396/rua.v27iI.8665728RUA; Vol. 27 No. 1 (2021): jun.; 33-55RUA; v. 27 n. 1 (2021): jun.; 33-552179-99111413-2109reponame:Rua (Campinas.
