To be or not to be (made) a clown (out of)? the performativity of denouncing utterances

Resumo: Based on photographs of street demonstrations in Brazil (2011-2015) and according to the theoretical assumptions of the Semantics of the Event (GUIMARÃES, 2005, 2017, 2018), in this article, we describe the performativity of utterances in which the designation of clown occurs. We analyze how (not) being a clown produces the ergative interpretation (not) being made a clown out of when we describe the way the enunciative scenes are configured in the event of such utterances and their relationship with performativity. Thus, it was possible to understand how a negative utterance can function as a warning or a denunciation according to the way the Locutor divides him/herself and projects, from a social place of enunciation, the place of the one to whom that utterance is aimed.

Analisamos de que maneira (não) ser palhaço produz a interpretação ergativa (não) ser feito de palhaço ao descrevermos como as cenas enunciativas se configuram no acontecimento de tais enunciados e sua relação com a performatividade. Desse modo, foi possível compreender como um dizer negado pode funcionar como um aviso ou uma denúncia conforme o modo como o Locutor se divide e projeta, a partir de um lugar social de dizer, o lugar daquele a quem destina esse dizer.
