The gas chamber and the Genivaldo case: power and endurance in the Brazilian cartoon

Resumo: The article analyzes the cartoon, "Câmara de gás", published by Nando Motta, on the portal, www.brasil247.com. The text addresses the murder of Genivaldo de Jesus dos Santos on May 25, 2022. Paraded by the PRF Sergipe, for driving a motorcycle without helmet, the boy was locked in a makeshift vehicle as a gas chamber. Such an action caused outrage by cultivating similitudes with the Nazi gas chambers. Based on discourse analysis, in the wake of theorists such as Pêcheux (1997), Foucault (2000; 2004; 2009), Courtine (2020) observed how symbolic elements materialize power effects typical of a control society. Our analysis showed that the death of a poor black man recalls the more than 300 years of slavery in Brazil, as well as the Nazi eugenics project. However, the cartoon, in this process of discursivization, functions as a mode of resistance in contemporary social practices.

La caricatura aborda el asesinato de Genivaldo de Jesus dos Santos el 25 de mayo de 2022. Desfilado por el sargento PRF, por conducir una motocicleta sin casco, el niño fue encerrado en un vehículo improvisado como cámara de gas. Tal acción causó indignación al cultivar similitudes con las cámaras de gas nazis. Basándose en el análisis del discurso, siguiendo la estela de teóricos como Pêcheux (1997), Foucault (2000; 2004; 2009), Courtine (2020) observó cómo los elementos simbólicos materializan los efectos de poder típicos de una sociedad de control. Nuestro análisis mostró que la muerte de un hombre negro pobre recuerda los más de 300 años de esclavitud en Brasil, así como el proyecto eugenésico nazi. Sin embargo, la caricatura, en este proceso de discursivización, funciona como un modo de resistencia en las prácticas sociales contemporáneas.O artigo analisa a charge “Câmara de gás”, publicada por Nando Motta no portal, www.brasil247.com. O texto aborda o assassinato de Genivaldo de Jesus dos Santos ocorrido em 25 de maio de 2022. Parado pela PRF de Sergipe por estar conduzindo uma moto sem capacete, o rapaz foi trancafiado numa viatura improvisada como câmara de gás. Tal ação causou indignação por cultivar similitudes com as câmaras de gás nazistas. Com base na Análise do Discurso, na esteira de teóricos como Pêcheux (1997), Foucault (2000; 2004; 2009), Courtine (2020) observamos como os elementos simbólicos materializam efeitos de poder típicos de uma sociedade de controle. Nossa análise mostrou que a morte de um homem preto e pobre, rememora os mais de 300 anos de escravidão no Brasil, bem como o projeto eugenista nazista.
