Relationships between termination and morphological gender in Said Ali: the index -l in Portuguese

Resumo: This article seeks to explore the morphological gender in the Portuguese by investigating the relation between gender and ending. Said Ali (1923, p.55-68) contributed to this question by presenting possible gender indexes for nouns; however, to verify what is pointed out by the author, it is necessary to analyze in an expanded way how the morphological gender manifests itself in the different possible endings of nouns in the Portuguese language. In this sense, this text proposes to study how nouns ending in -l works, considering that they tend to belong to the masculine morphological gender; besides examining the occurrence of eventual exceptions, seeking hypotheses that could explain their functioning.
