Glass hearts: the possible functional aspects of the bottles of the Galeao Santíssimo Sacramento

Resumo: This article aims to discuss the functionality of a collection of glass bottles that were recovered from the Galleon Santíssimo Sacramento sunk on May 5, 1666 on the coast of the city of Salvador, Bahia. The artifacts in question have square bases and are referred to in the specialized bibliography as “case bottle”. The text presents some morphological and technological characteristics of these bottles, as well as drawing parallels with other collections recovered from other shipwrecks. The possible contents that they would have stored during the trip were discussed, as well as contextualizing the habits, beliefs and customs that would be associated with these contents and, at the end, it presents a reflection on the use of the term “case bottle”.

Los artefactos en cuestión tienen bases cuadradas y se hace referencia en la bibliografía especializada como "case bottle". El texto presenta algunas características morfológicas y tecnológicas de estas botellas, además de establecer paralelismos con otras colecciones recuperadas de otros naufragios. Se discutieron los posibles contenidos que habrían almacenado durante el viaje, así como contextualizar los hábitos, creencias y costumbres que se asociarían con estos contenidos y, al final, se presenta una reflexión sobre el uso del término "case bottle".Este artigo tem por proposta discutir a funcionalidade de uma coleção de garrafas de vidro que foram recuperadas do Galeão Santíssimo Sacramento afundado em 05 de maio de 1666 no litoral da cidade de Salvador, Bahia. Os artefatos, em questão, apresentam bases quadradas e são chamadas na bibliografia especializada de “case bottle”. O texto apresenta algumas características morfológicas e tecnológicas dessas garrafas, bem como traça paralelos com outras coleções recuperadas de outros naufrágios.
