This article analyzes the debates and disputes that were in the genesis of creating the first Secondary Public School of the Minas Gerais province called “Collegio de Nossa Senhora de Assumpção”. Anchored on the studies of the Nw History, Political History and History of Education, we analyzed newspapers of the period, provincial reports and the educational legislation. It's clear the powers disputes, especially, between the Civil and Ecclesiastical Power, on the context of governmental strategies aimed to the organization and institutionalization of the provincial educational field consequential of the 1834 constitutional amendment. The modernization of the province and the demands of professionals to the new imperial bureaucracies defined the theme of the debates orienting the critics to the detachment of the practices and of the contents present on the formation of the youth from Minas Gerais.
