Resumo: The article presents the trajectory of the Polyclinic of Botafogo (PB), a philanthropic entity created by doctors from Rio de Janeiro in 1900 that aimed to fulfill a double mission: to take care of poor patients free of charge and to promote the practical learning of medicine. It analyzes the care culture, pointing out the values ​​and interests that motivated the doctors and elites of the Botafogo neighborhood to dedicate themselves to free and voluntary work with the poor. It presents the main characteristics of the adopted care model and analyzes the health demands of the poor regarding the medical services offered.

Analisa a cultura assistencial, apontando quais eram os valores e os interesses que motivaram médicos e elites do bairro de Botafogo a se dedicarem ao trabalho voluntário e gratuito junto aos pobres.
