Contribution of Maria Antonieta de Castro to the study of physical development os São Paulo schools (1930s)

This paper aims to give visibility to the research undertaken by Maria Antonieta de Castro and presented as a thesis to the chair of Statistics, from the Free School of Sociology and Politics of São Paulo, in 1934, entitled “Weight and height of students of S. Paulo”. The thesis was published by the Gazeta Clínica in November 1942, a monthly magazine, which published articles on São Paulo medicine since 1903. Maria Antonieta de Castro’s thesis socialized data from a survey of more than 8,000 students from school groups in the city, from São Paulo, aged between 7 and 14 years. Data were obtained through individual forms collected by 30 health educators, when Maria Antonieta worked at the Pedagogical Anthropometry Service (1932-1933). The thesis, approved “with distinction”, passed the examining board composed by Walter Leser, Pedro Egídio de Carvalho and Samuel H. Lowrie. Maria Antonieta de Castro's research establishes a turning point in the health research of school children of the Pedagogical Anthropometry Service, calling into question studies that demonstrated weight and height as unique measures to determine the child's nutritional status.
