Resumo: The article reflects on Vicente Gomes Jardim, "artist" and "colored man" in Parahyba do Norte. From official documents, press and memorial literature and the social history of slavery and post-abolition, the article points out the member of an maroon brotherhood, founder of a workers organization, and author of technical texts. It is concluded that his life demonstrates the various possibilities of being black in the Brazil between XIXth and XXth.

A partir de documentos oficiales, prensa y literatura memorialística y de la historia social de la esclavitud y post-abolición, se refleja sobre el miembro de hermandad de pardos, fundador de Sociedad de Artistas y autor de textos técnicos. Concluye que la trayectoria de Jardim demostra las diversas posibilidades de ser negro entre siglo XIX y XX.Este artigo busca investigar a vida de Vicente Gomes Jardim, um “artista” e “homem de cor” na Parahyba do Norte (1841-1905). Por meio de documentos oficiais, da imprensa, da literatura memorialística e da história social da escravidão e pós-abolição, reflete-se sobre esse membro de irmandade de pardos, fundador da Sociedade de Artistas Mechanicos e Liberaes da Parahyba e autor de textos técnicos.
