Between the city of São Paulo of the past and the present in the urban landscape representation of Benedito Calixto de Jesus

Resumo: Benedito Calixto de Jesus (1853-1927) has a large pictorial production that comprehends the representation of the city of Sao Paulo consisting of long demolished churches, as well as still existing ones, such as Luz Convent. Starting from some of the paintings of Calixto’s urban series, the article aims at analyzing the transformations reached by the artist’s work, in order to understand them facing the architectonic and urbanistic transformations occurred between the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth, in Sao Paulo. This research still demonstrates that the collection of paintings here analyzed, in fact, starts from a set of photographs made by Militão Augusto de Azevedo (1837-1905) in the nineteenth century and, transformed into paintings, contribute both to the comprehension of the architectonic patrimony and to the artistic one.

A partir de algunas de las pinturas de esa série urbana, el artículo desea analizar las transformaciones logradas a través de su obra, para comprenderlas delante de las transformaciones arquitectónicas y urbanísticas ocurridas entre el final del siglo XIX y el inicio del XX, en San Pablo. La investigación demostra que el conjunto de pinturas aquí analizado, en verdad, parte de un conjunto de fotografías de Militão Augusto de Azevedo (1837-1905) del siglo XIX y, que trasformadas en pinturas, contribuyen para el entendimiento del património arquitectónico y artístico.Benedito Calixto de Jesus (1853-1927) possui uma vasta produção pictórica que abrange a representação da cidade de São Paulo, tanto de igrejas já demolidas, quanto de igrejas ainda existentes, como o Recolhimento da Luz. Partindo de algumas das pinturas dessa série urbana de Calixto, o artigo pretende analisar as transformações alcançadas através da obra do artista, com o objetivo de compreendê-las diante das transformações arquitetônicas e urbanísticas ocorridas entre o final do século XIX e início do XX, em São Paulo.
