Anamnesis and clinical examinations are of great help for dental students and dental surgeons. Besides being able to protect themselves legally by having the data from all consultations, professionals can get to know their patients more deeply. Through medical and dental histories, it is possible to learn about the allergies and medications used by each patient, being able to analyze particularly oral and general aspects. Based on each answer that patients give, professionals are able to establish a specific diagnosis, protocol, and treatment. Therefore, the present study aims to discuss the importance of the dental surgeon performing a detailed anamnesis and evaluation of children, especially in situations where maltreatment is suspected. Due to the scarcity of research on the subject, for the collection of data, in addition to the literature review, an online questionnaire was given to the dental students of the Cesumar University of Maringá - PR, following the norms of the Ethics Committee. From the research, it was observed that few can identify signs of mistreatment and many are still afraid of making the notifications. Such results elucidate how necessary it is to increase knowledge on the subject, since the performance of complete exams and the storage of as much information about the patient as possible, help to increase the identification of maltreatment and decrease the infant morbidity and mortality rate.
