The use of illicit drugs has increased alarmingly around the world. It is necessary that dental professionals know the risks that exist in the care of patients who use drugs. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the influence of drug use for dental care, also reflecting on the historical concept of the use of psychoactive substances, exemplifying the types of psychoactive substances, understanding the main factors that lead the individual to use and dependency. It is important to note that most individuals who start using drugs do not progress to drug addiction, but the chronic and relapsing nature of drug addiction meets all the criteria for a chronic disease. Based on an analysis in this regard, the issue of which influences drugs may have on users' oral health was raised. This narrative literature review discusses drug addiction as a contemporary social phenomenon that has consequences for oral health and that, when seeking dental care, the patient is at increased risk for angina, arterial hypertension and myocardial infarction. In this way, reflective aspects are pointed out on how dental care can corroborate so that users regain self-esteem, social interaction and motivation in relation to their appearance and oral health, and care when performing dental care to these patients.
