The use of dental implants is one of the available treatment options for rehabilitation of totally or partially edentulous patients, one of the specialties of the dentist is to promote the masticatory function by means of supported implant prostheses. Long periods of edentulism can provide considerable bone loss of the jaws. To maintain the integrity of the lower alveolar nerve (NAI), in cases of severe resorption of the posterior jaw region, a technique was created where the nerve is lateralized to preserve it. Given this aspect, this study is justified to emphasize the feasibility of using lower alveolar nerve lateralization surgery techniques. The general objective of the research was to describe the relevance of the lower alveolar nerve lateralization surgery technique in the installation of dental implants and to emphasize the importance of planning prior to surgery and post-surgical follow-up, as well as to identify the risks and benefits of lower alveolar nerve lateralization. It was chosen to make a bibliographic survey in scientific articles of an exploratory nature and qualitative approach. As results obtained, the use of the piezoelectric scalpel has been standing out each day for its precision, cut selectivity and clear visual field. In this research, it is possible to understand the technique of lateralization of the inferior alveolar nerve and its complexity. This study has provided the understanding of several phases of the use of this technique, which if performed with the appropriate instruments, can provide a satisfactory bone environment for the installation of dental implants.
