Teeth whitening is currently one of the most sought after alternatives to obtain a whiter smile. The stains found on the teeth can be classified as intrinsic or extrinsic, where the first is related to genetic factors and the second to personal habits, such as eating foods containing pigments and smoking. To eliminate these stains there are techniques available on the market, such as the homemade one, which is used in patients with extrinsic stains and executed with an individual plastic dental tray by the patient himself at his residence, this technique is widely used in patients who show sensitivity because it utilizes a lower percentage of gel. At the clinic, the whitening is done by a dental surgeon, who will create protection with a gingival barrier and apply the gel on the dental surface in a higher percentage, it’s indicated for non-collaborating patients and for those who want a faster result, as it’s already possible to observe a satisfactory effect in the first session. The internal whitening is done with sodium perborate, which is applied inside the conduit when the tooth is darkened by necrosis, endodontic treatment, among others. To achieve the desired repercussion, the dental surgeon must provide good instruction, execute return appointments to observe the treatment’s progress and take due care to protect the oral health of their patient.
