Classificação das doenças periodontais 1999 versus 2017. um guia didático para prática clínica

It is evident the need to develop the classification of gingival and periodontal diseases and conditions, because through the classification clinicians and specialists are able to communicate effectively, in addition to allowing the disease to be properly diagnosed and treated. In the 1999 classification, some failure were identified, which through new studies by specialists were susceptible to changes. In 2017 at the World Workshop in Chicago these changes were made by scientists through evidence bases. It is well known that the biggest change occurred in the classification of periodontitis, where in 1999 there were two categories considered to be distinct, “chronic” and “aggressive”. In 2017, everyone present at the workshop agreed that both categories don`t have clinical signs and symptoms that are distinct enough to be different, so they have become just periodontitis, taking into account their severity and progression. In addition to periodontitis, other classifications underwent changes and some classes and terms that didn`t exist they were introduced. This article describes the main differences between the most recent classifications, in order to help in clinical practice.
