The presence of the dental surgeon (DS) in a multidisciplinary team in the routine of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is recent. The presence of this professional in the hospital environment is more strongly related to oral and maxillo facial surgery and traumatology, but currently, many dentistry specialties are unquestionably integrated with hospital dentistry. Every day more international and national studies have been showing the importance of Dentistry in this atmosphere, both in the ICU and outside. When the DS and the hospital staff act together, it is possible to prepare the patient for hospitalization, perform humanized practices that can significantly improve the length of hospital stay, reduce mortality, infections, morbidity, nosocomial pneumonia, in addition to acting in the prevention and treatment of several alterations that may be affected during the period of hospitalization and provide well-being to the patient. During this pandemic period of COVID-19, the presence of DS in the ICU becomes crucial, as patients with worse oral health conditions tend to develop ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Based on the literature review carried out, it was highlighted that a difference in the health of all patients present in this highly complex sector is observed through simple practices such as oral hygiene (OH) and its guidance to the nursing team held through protocols. Although several studies address the importance of dental professionals in the routine of the ICU, it is not yet a reality in all hospitals. It is intended, therefore, to contribute to its valorization in the ICU and, thus, to contribute to the improvement of the health conditions of hospitalized people, reducing the length of hospitalization, additionally contributing to their well-being throughout the period that they are hospitalized.
