Resumo: Computed tomography (CT) is characterized as a diagnostic imaging method, which makes use of x ray radiation, enabling the reproduction of a section of the human body from any of the three planes. The use of CT has spread in view of the difficulties faced by dentists in the use of conventional radiograph. As far as endodontics is concerned, imaging exams are an essential part of the diagnosis and treatment plan; thus, periapical radiographs are the most used. The present work aims to analyze the need, as well as the importance of the use of computerized tomography in diagnosis and treatment in endodontics. The research was developed using the descriptive method, through the survey of bibliographic data, and a narrative review of the literature was performed from selected articles in the databases: Scielo, Lilacs, PubMed, BVS. Descriptors in English and Portuguese, alone or combined were used.

O uso da TC difundiu tendo em vista as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos odontólogos no uso de radiografias convencionais. No que tange à endodontia, ressalta se que os exames de imagem se configuram como parte essencial para o diagnóstico e o plano de tratamento; assim, as radiografias periapicais são as mais utilizadas. O presente trabalho busca analisar a necessidade, bem como a importância do uso da Tomografia computadorizada no diagnóstico e tratamento na endodontia. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida utilizando o método descritivo, através do levantamento de dados bibliográficos, sendo realizada uma revisão narrativa da literatura a partir de artigos selecionados nas bases de dados: Scielo, Lilacs, Pubmed, BVS.
