According to World Health Organization estimates, 9.3% of Brazilians have some anxiety disorder. These disorders directly affect the daily routine of dental practice through patients who have several manifestations of fear, stress and severe anxiety when treating oral conditions. The care of anxious patients can be difficult, impaired or, in severe cases, made impossible by the psychological condition of the patient, which makes it necessary to have an effective approach for each case and each level of complexity presented to the professional. The literature provides several techniques and strategies for managing anxious patients, from pediatrics to geriatrics, in order to facilitate the professional-patient relationship and establish the necessary security to enable quality dental treatment. The present work provides a current overview of anxiety disorders and derivatives, their possible causes, the dental approach to anxious patients and the importance of integrating dentistry and psychology in the multidisciplinary treatment of these patients.
