Practices related to care for the perioperative patient require the use of surgical aprons and drapes, which act as a barrier method against penetration and contamination of infectious agents. The market currently offers two types of surgical gowns and gowns: reusable fabric (cotton) and disposable materials (SMS). Investigate the advantage of replacing the reusable cotton fabric field for the SMS disposable material in the materials and sterilization center. A systematic literature review was carried out using the integrative analysis method. During the bibliographic survey, 15 articles were found, of which 7 were not in accordance with the objectives proposed in this review. Eight articles were selected, all of which compared 4 disposable and reusable materials. The cost-benefit of acquiring the disposable material is lower compared to the reusable material, since it undergoes reprocessing, causing loss of the protective barrier capacity with each wash, and currently there are no control and monitoring mechanisms for these materials. In view of the results, the advantages of using disposable aprons and surgical drapes were evidenced, in relation to reusable drapes. From the cost analysis of the research used, it was identified that the financial impact is greater when using materials with cotton fabric, since they imply in several stages for their reuse
