Diastemas are interdental spaces, which result in the absence of contact between one tooth and another. More frequent in anterior teeth, in the upper arch between the incisors, they have a great influence on the aesthetics of the smile. The presence of diastemas can also cause damage to the periodontium by direct exposure due to the lack of contact points. To increase the mesiodistal extension and close these spaces, different restorative techniques can be used, such as direct, direct-indirect, and indirect. The aim of this study was to discuss and detail the different techniques and materials for closing the diastema through dental restorations. The different techniques depend on professional skill, available materials, treatment time and have different costs for the professional and the patient. Therefore, it was concluded that the three techniques discussed have good clinical longevity, satisfactory aesthetic, and functional results, if they are well indicated and well applied.
