Fiber posts are used in endodontically treated teeth, when the coronal remnants are unable to retain the material used to perform dental restoration. The objective of the current paper is to review in the literature the proper indications for the use of fiber posts, and the factors that lead to a greater success of the restoration. In this research, we could observe that the most common adverse effect of this treatment is fiber post detachment. The detachment can be avoided by the correct choice of the intracanal retainer, preparation of the posts with grooves to accomplish a better retention, using de anatomic post technique and the performance of a material surface treatment. This surface treatment could be a chemical or mechanical treatment, like silanization or particle sandblasting. Another important factor is the choice of an adhesive system and an adequate luting agent. Dual resin cements are usually recommended. The review demonstrates that execution of the technique in an ideal way raises the treatment’s success rate.
