Resumo: Essentials oils, second metabolism products, has been a research source for industrial application, being in pharmaceutical, food or cosmetics. The benefits of the use of the oils are related to its satisfactory antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Cordia verbenacea (Erva Baleeira) is a Brazilian medicinal plant which secondary metabolites are related to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and healing activities. Essential oils are widely studied, however, the blend of compounds in these materials makes correlate the chemical characterization results with biological and chemical activities very hard. Thus, chemical characterization studies are important not only to enable hypothesis about substances found and its properties, but also to quality control in essential oils production. Therefore, correlate the chemical characterization results with biological and chemical activities makes way for synthesis studies with terpenes that have activities of interest. Thereby, this work consists in analyse C. verbenacea essential oil from the chemical point of view. The samples, extracted by the productor, where examined in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and compared with the NIST 11.0 library. 22 substances were found, these, only β-himachalene and α-cadinol weren’t encountered in any other C. verbenacea research. Thus, it was concluded that the evaluated essential oil has high resemblance with C. verbenacea essential oils found on literature.

Os benefícios do uso desses óleos estão relacionados com sua atividade anti-inflamatória, antimicrobiana e antioxidante. A Cordia verbenacea (Erva Baleeira) é uma planta medicinal brasileira, que possui metabólitos secundários bastante relacionados à sua atividade anti-inflamatória, antimicrobianas e cicatrizante. Essas substâncias são amplamente estudadas, contudo, a mistura de compostos presentes nesses materiais faz com que seja difícil a correlação dos efeitos químicos ou biológicos com componentes específicos. Por isso, estudos de caracterização química são fundamentais não só para possibilitar hipóteses sobre as substâncias encontradas e suas propriedades funcionais, como também para o controle de qualidade na produção de óleos essenciais. Assim, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar quimicamente esse produto de C. verbenacea. Examinamos as amostras em cromatógrafo gasoso acoplado a espectrômetro de massas (CG-EM) e comparadas com a biblioteca NIST 11.0. Encontramos 22 substâncias, sendo destas, apenas o β-himachaleno e o α-cadinol não deparados em outras pesquisas com a C. verbenacea.
