Resumo: With spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a specific type of neuromuscular disease, caused by degeneration of motor neurons, resulting in atrophies and progressive muscle weakness. There are several subtypes of the disease, classified based on the age of onset of symptoms. The objective of this research is to verify the level of perception of the families of patients with SMA regarding the effectiveness of using the Spinraza medication associated with physical therapy. Therefore, 114 families of 5 individuals with the disease, who have a closed diagnosis, were selected, and answered a questionnaire prepared by the researchers, applied via social networks. Subsequently, an analysis of the results was carried out and the following data were obtained: Of the types of SMA, type I, is the most frequent and is considered the most serious of all. The medicine Spinraza is an alternative so that the disease does not progress and works by improving muscle strength. A little more than half of the interviewees use the drug, which is obtained, most of the times, by judicial means. Physiotherapy works by preventing disease worsening, and can provide better survival, making it as functional as possible, through exercise-based treatment protocols. Of the 114 respondents, only one does not undergo physical therapy, which demonstrates the significant importance of physical therapy in this context. It is possible to say that the use of the medicine Spinraza brings benefits by itself, and when associated with physiotherapy is more effective, both act to prevent the disease from progressing, providing a better quality of life, although none of them bring a cure.
