Resumo: The lane snapper, Lutjanus synagris (Linnaeus, 1758) is a marine fish of great commercial value, which contributes to the artisanal marine fish production of Brazil. As a consequence, the stocks of this species have been threatened by overfishing. As such, it becomes important to carry out studies on the reproductive aspects of fish, to facilitate the understanding of mechanisms that involve the perpetuation of this species and also to provide subsidies for fisheries management. This study aimed to determine the length-weight relationship, sex ratio, mean length at first maturity and macroscopic characterization of the gonadal development of L. synagris captured in the coastal of Rio Grande do Norte, during the period 2010 to 2011. The length-weight relationship indicates that males and females of L. synagris grow with equal increment in length and weight. The sex ratio shows a predominance of males in the population. The length at which 50% of L. synagris reaches maturity was25.7 cm. The macroscopic characteristics of the ovaries and testes revealed four stages of gonadal development: immature, maturing, mature and spent. The macroscopic description of the ovaries and testes demonstrates how gonadal development occurs during the reproductive cycle, providing data to indicate the reproductive period of the species in the region. Keywords: lane snapper; L. synagris; length-weight relationship; gonadal development.
