Resumo: Genetic methodologies have been increasingly utilized in fish breeding programs and conservation biology through classical and modern techniques, such as chromosomal manipulation and molecular markers. Among the different approaches have been identified a rapid growth of chromosomal information about species and populations. In this review are detailed the different applications and perspectives of cytogenetic studies and chromosome manipulation related to native or cultivated fishes. The scenario presented demonstrates its enormous importance in studies on the identification of biodiversity, although chromosome manipulation also will be routinely employed in several species. Despite the great marine biodiversity and of the economic value of their species, cytogenetic data is reduced and have been less applicable in the marine fish farming. Keywords: Fish cytogenetics; chromosomes; marine fish farming; chromosome manipulation.
