Resumo: This work reviewed the age estimation of 35 species of marine fish from the Brazilian coastal region. A total of 42 scientific articles were used, and the data were categorized according to the decade when they were published, pair of otoliths used to estimate age, validation of the methods employed, causes of formation of age rings and age of fish. The results showed an increase in the studies of age and growth of marine fish. Sagitta otolith was the most used in aging studies. In general, aging was related to reproductive activity of the fish and temperature. From 1 to 76 rings (mean=16) were encountered in Brazilian marine fish. It could be concluded that it is feasible to utilize otoliths to determine age of fish of coastal tropical environments.  It is very important for basic biological studies which could provide information to evaluate the fishery stocks and for conservation of marine fish. Keywords: age rings; growth; sagittae; Brazilian coastal region; fishery resources.

Universidade Federal do AmapáCNPqCAPESOliveira, Mônica RochaHawkins, Stephen JohnTrueman, CliveYamamoto, Maria EmíliaChellappa, Sathyabama2014-10-10info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.unifap.br/index.php/biota/article/view/110210.18561/2179-5746/biotaamazonia.v4n3p125-131Biota Amazônia (Biote Amazonie, Biota Amazonia, Amazonian Biota); v. 4, n. 3 (2014); 125-1312179-5746reponame:Biota Amazôniainstname:Universidade Federal do Amapá (UNIFAP)instacron:UNIFAPporhttps://periodicos.unifap.br/index.php/biota/article/view/1102/v4n3p125-131.pdfDireitos autorais 2014 Biota Amazônia (Biote Amazonie, Biota Amazonia, Amazonian Biota)http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2016-04-12T19:58:16Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/1102Revistahttp://periodicos.unifap.br/index.php/biotaONGhttps://periodicos.unifap.br/index.php/biota/oai||juliosa@unifap.br2179-57462179-5746opendoar:2016-04-12T19:58:16Biota Amazônia - Universidade Federal do Amapá (UNIFAP)false
