Evaluation of the supply and production of dental specialties in public secondary care services in a state in northeastern Brazil

In Ceará, the expansion of the offer of the Dental Specialties Centers (CEO) is recent. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the supply and production of CEOs from Ceará in the period from 2008 to 2014 from secondary data recorded in the Information System of the Unified Health System. The data were expressed in absolute and percentage form and the chi-square tests and Spearman's correlation were used. The results showed that the number of procedures in 2008 was 280222 (9.2%), with a slight reduction to 253370 (8.3%) in 2009, an increase to 677664 (22.3%) in 2010, with subsequent falls in 2011 ( n = 525259, 17.3%), 2012 (n = 430991, n = 14.2%) and 2013 (n = 291666, 9.6%) resuming growth in 2014 (n = 457192, 15.1%), totaling 3035626 procedures in the period 2008- 2014. There was no statistically significant correlation between the number of procedures and the time of the evaluated period (p = 0.444). Regarding the type of management, municipal CEOs, p = 0.003, r = 0.964 and state CEOs, p = 0.048, r = 0.775) showed significant growth in the period evaluated. Despite the expansion of secondary oral health services in Ceará and the growing number of registered specialized procedures, the ability to solve the problems of these services is still considered a challenge for oral health managers and professionals.
