Self-mutilation in adolescence: a psychosocial phenomenon of contemporaneity

Resumo: Self-mutilation is a non-suicidal and intentional self-inflicted aggression that is not socially accepted. The constant rise of self-injury among the youth points that this practice is not caused only by individual factors, emerging the need to investigate if there are factors that provoke collective suffering and induce self-mutilation. The objective was to explore the influence of factors from contemporaneity on the occurrence of self-mutilation in adolescents. The method was an integrative literature review with searches in four databases. From the results, eight studies were included. It is possible to understand that the contemporaneity’s way of functioning is covered by an uneasiness that acts over the individuals. In adolescence, loneliness and helplessness interfere with the symbolization and elaboration of emotional pain. Therefore, self-injury becomes an expression of suffering and uneasiness. Simultaneously, suffering can be addressed on social networks, reinforcing the practice’s contagious effect.

Simultaneously, suffering can be addressed on social networks, reinforcing the practice’s contagious effect.La automutilación es una agresión autoinfligida, intencional, no suicida y no aceptada socialmente.  Su incidencia cada vez mayor, especialmente entre los jóvenes, indica que esta práctica no es provocada sólo por factores individuales siendo necesario investigar la existencia de hechos que provocan sufrimiento colectivo y favorecen este comportamiento.  El objetivo del estudio fue explorar la influencia de factores presentes en la época contemporánea relacionados con la incidencia de autolesiones en adolescentes.  Se utilizó como método una revisión integrativa de la literatura, buscando en cuatro bases de datos.  De los resultados, se incluyeron ocho estudios.  Se entendió que la contemporaneidad está atravesada por un malestar que afecta a los individuos.  En la adolescencia, la soledad y el desamparo son percibidos como interferencias en la simbolización y elaboración del dolor emocional.  Por lo tanto, la autolesión se convierte en una expresión del sufrimiento y malestar que inunda a los sujetos.  Simultáneamente, las redes sociales se convierten en interlocutores del sufrimiento, contribuyendo al contagio de la práctica.A automutilação é uma agressão autoinfligida, intencional, não suicida e não aceita socialmente. Sua incidência sempre crescente, principalmente entre os jovens, indica que esta prática não é provocada apenas por fatores individuais, sendo necessário investigar se existem fatores que provocam sofrimento coletivo e favorecem o comportamento. O objetivo do estudo foi explorar a influência de fatores presentes na contemporaneidade relacionados à incidência da automutilação em adolescentes. Como método, utilizou-se a revisão integrativa da literatura, pesquisando-se em quatro bases de dados. Dos resultados, oito estudos foram incluídos. Compreendeu-se que a contemporaneidade é permeada de um mal-estar que acomete os indivíduos. Na adolescência, percebe-se a solidão e o desamparo como interferências à simbolização e à elaboração da dor emocional. Logo, a autolesão torna-se expressão do sofrimento e do mal-estar que inundam os sujeitos.
