The impact of a lecture-based intervention on the body satisfaction of teenagers enrolled in “Star Soccer” soccer academy

Resumo: Body satisfaction and body image are predictors of a series of positive or negative behaviors and attitudes towards the body. The present study aimed at testing the effectiveness of a three-week long lecture-based intervention, based on online lectures, called “o meu corpo, a minha imagem e suas possibilidades”, on the body satisfaction and on the body image perceptions of the participants. 67 pre-adolescents, aged between 12 and 13 years old, enrolled in the “Star Soccer” soccer academy, took part of the proposed intervention. Body dissatisfaction was measured by the Body Silhouette Scale adapted to teenagers. The degree of body dissatisfaction was measured by the difference between the perceived silhouette (first question) and the actual silhouette (second question). This difference was measured by a numerical scale ranging from -8 to 8. The Shapiro-Milk test was used as the normality test. The Mann-Whitney U test was applied to compare the two groups. The data collected after the intervention reveals a positive impact on the body satisfaction and on the body image perceptions of the participants. It is possible to conclude that the present study, in spite of some design and methodological weaknesses, contributes to the field of interventions aimed at improving the body satisfaction of pre-adolescents, providing tools and important data for future interventions.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo probar la efectividad de una intervención, consistente en un programa de conferencias en línea ("mi cuerpo, mi imagen y sus posibilidades"), con una duración de tres semanas, para promover un IC positivo y positivo de satisfacción corporal. 67 niños participaron en el estudio. de 12 a 13 años, integrantes del proyecto “STAR SOCCER”. La insatisfacción con la imagen corporal se evaluó mediante la Escala de Silueta Corporal adaptada para adolescentes. El grado de insatisfacción corporal se midió por la diferencia entre la puntuación correspondiente a la silueta percibida (pregunta 1) y la actual (pregunta 2), generando una puntuación que va de -8 a 8. La normalidad de los datos se probó mediante el Shapiro-Wilk prueba La comparación entre los grupos de las variables de caracterización de los participantes se realizó mediante la prueba U de Mann-Whitney. Se realizaron estadísticas descriptivas (absolutas y relativas) para la insatisfacción corporal. Los datos recogidos en la post-intervención muestran que hubo un impacto positivo en la satisfacción corporal y la imagen corporal de los participantes en el grupo de intervención. Se concluye que el presente estudio, aunque tiene algunas limitaciones, es de gran valor para la literatura sobre intervenciones para mejorar la satisfacción corporal en preadolescentes, ofreciendo un camino efectivo para futuras intervenciones.A satisfação corporal e a imagem corporal são preditoras de uma série de comportamentos e de atitudes, positivos ou negativos, em relação ao corpo. Este estudo teve por objetivo testar a efetividade de uma intervenção, consistente em um programa de palestras on-line (“o meu corpo, a minha imagem e suas possibilidades”), com duração de três semanas, para a promoção de uma IC positiva e da satisfação corporal. Participaram do estudo 67 meninos. de 12 a 13 anos, integrantes do projeto “STAR SOCCER”. A insatisfação com a imagem corporal foi avaliada a partir da Escala de Silhuetas Corporais adaptada para adolescentes. O grau de insatisfação corporal foi medido pela diferença entre a pontuação correspondente à silhueta percebida (pergunta 1) e a atual (pergunta 2), gerando pontuação com variação de -8 a 8. A normalidade dos dados foi testada pelo teste de Shapiro-Wilk. A comparação entre os grupos das variáveis de caracterização dos participantes foi feita pelo teste U de Mann-Whitney. Foi realizada estatística descritiva (absoluta e relativa) para a insatisfação corporal. Os dados coletados no pós-intervenção revelam ter ocorrido um impacto positivo, no grupo da intervenção, na satisfação corporal e na imagem corporal dos participantes.
