Resumo: | Parafunctional habits, such as bruxism, involve abnormal muscular and dental activities that can cause serious orofacial dysfunction, including tooth wear, fractures, temporomandibular joint pain and sleep disorders. Orofacial harmonization, which combines aesthetic and functional procedures to improve the aesthetics and function of the orofacial region, plays a crucial role in minimizing the harmful effects of bruxism. This involves the use of customized bite plates, application of botulinum toxin to relax the chewing muscles and aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of damaged teeth. Botulinum toxin, known for its applications in aesthetic and neurological medicine, has stood out as an effective supporting option in the treatment of bruxism. Acting by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine in neuromuscular junctions, it reduces the strength of muscle contractions during episodes of bruxism, relieving pressure on the teeth and temporomandibular joint. The approach is non-invasive and temporary, offering an attractive alternative to traditional techniques. However, its application must be carried out by qualified healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective results. Therefore, botulinum toxin emerges as a promising supporting option in the management of bruxism, contributing to improving the quality of life of patients affected by these parafunctional habits. Thus, this narrative literature review research aims to demonstrate scientific literary production on the possibility of applying supporting therapies, such as botulinum toxin, in the management of parafunctional habits, such as bruxism. |

A harmonização orofacial, que combina procedimentos estéticos e funcionais para melhorar a estética e função da região orofacial, desempenha um papel crucial na minimização dos efeitos prejudiciais do bruxismo. Isso envolve a utilização de placas de mordida personalizadas, aplicação de toxina botulínica para relaxar os músculos mastigatórios e reabilitação estética e funcional dos dentes danificados. A toxina botulínica, conhecida por suas aplicações em medicina estética e neurológica, tem se destacado como uma opção coadjuvante eficaz no tratamento do bruxismo. Agindo ao inibir a liberação de acetilcolina nas junções neuromusculares, ela reduz a força das contrações musculares durante episódios de bruxismo, aliviando a pressão nos dentes e na articulação temporomandibular. A abordagem é não invasiva e temporária, oferecendo uma alternativa atraente às técnicas tradicionais. No entanto, sua aplicação deve ser realizada por profissionais de saúde qualificados para garantir resultados seguros e eficazes. Portanto, a toxina botulínica emerge como uma promissora opção coadjuvante no manejo do bruxismo, contribuindo para a melhoria da qualidade de vida dos pacientes afetados por esses hábitos parafuncionais. Dessa forma, essa pesquisa de revisão narrativa da literatura, tem como objetivo demonstrar a produção literária científica sobre a possibilidade de aplicação de terapias coadjuvantes, como a toxina botulínica, no manejo dos hábitos parafuncionais, como o bruxismo.Los hábitos parafuncionales, como el bruxismo, implican actividades musculares y dentales anormales que pueden causar disfunción orofacial grave, incluido desgaste dental, fracturas, dolor en la articulación temporomandibular y trastornos del sueño. La armonización orofacial, que combina procedimientos estéticos y funcionales para mejorar la estética y la función de la región orofacial, juega un papel crucial para minimizar los efectos nocivos del bruxismo. Se trata del uso de placas de mordida personalizadas, la aplicación de toxina botulínica para relajar la musculatura masticatoria y la rehabilitación estética y funcional de los dientes dañados. La toxina botulínica, conocida por sus aplicaciones en medicina estética y neurológica, se ha destacado como una eficaz opción de apoyo en el tratamiento del bruxismo. Actuando inhibiendo la liberación de acetilcolina en las uniones neuromusculares, reduce la fuerza de las contracciones musculares durante los episodios de bruxismo, aliviando la presión sobre los dientes y la articulación temporomandibular. El abordaje no es invasivo y temporal, y ofrece una alternativa atractiva a las técnicas tradicionales. Sin embargo, su aplicación debe ser realizada por profesionales sanitarios cualificados para garantizar resultados seguros y eficaces. Por tanto, la toxina botulínica surge como una prometedora opción de apoyo en el manejo del bruxismo, contribuyendo a mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes afectados por estos hábitos parafuncionales.
