Promoting the use of free software through a pedagogical intervention project in a school in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Brazil

Resumo: The article presents the results of a pedagogical intervention project that aimed to raise awareness among students against digital piracy and in favor of the basic and advanced uses of open source software at the Federal Institute of North of Minas Gerais (IFNMG Campus Almenara), a public institution located in the Jequitinhonha Valley region (Brazil), which offers technical training courses in Informatics and in systems analysis and development. The intervention actions were based on the results of a diagnostic research in a quantitative, intersectional, self-applied survey format, with non-probability sampling for accessibility, which involved the application of 115 questionnaires among high school students. The diagnostic pointed so much to the difficulty of distinguishing between free and proprietary software, as well as the widespread use of pirated software. The intervention actions were based on the elaboration of posters dealing with the aspects identified as the most sensitive, and the intervention in the classroom with dialogue and debate on free software. It was concluded that actions were to arouse students' interest and curiosity in relation to the alternative, safe and legal possibilities that free software offers.

Las acciones de intervención se basaron en los resultados de una investigación diagnóstica cuantitativa, interseccional, autoaplicada, con muestreo no probabilístico para accesibilidad. La investigación implicó la aplicación de 115 cuestionarios entre estudiantes de secundaria, que señalaron tanto la dificultad para distinguir entre software libre y propietario como el uso generalizado de software pirateado. Las acciones de intervención se basaron en la elaboración de carteles sobre los aspectos identificados como más sensibles, y la intervención en el aula con diálogo y debate sobre el software libre. Se concluyó que las acciones lograron despertar el interés y la curiosidad de los estudiantes en relación a las posibilidades alternativas, seguras y legales que ofrece el software libre.O artigo em tela apresenta os resultados de um projeto de intervenção pedagógica para sensibilização de estudantes contra a pirataria digital e a favor dos usos básico e avançado de softwares livres e/ou gratuitos no IFNMG Campus Almenara, uma instituição pública localizada na região do vale do Jequitinhonha, região nordeste de Minas Gerais, que oferece os cursos de formação técnica em Informática e em Análise e Desenvolvimento de Sistemas. As ações de intervenção foram baseadas nos resultados de uma pesquisa diagnóstica em formato de survey de caráter quantitativo, interseccional, autoaplicado, com amostragem não-probabilística por acessibilidade, que envolveu a aplicação de 115 questionários entre estudantes do ensino médio, e que apontou tanto para a dificuldade de distinção entre softwares livres e proprietários, quanto para o uso difundido de softwares piratas. As ações de intervenção basearam-se na elaboração de cartazes tratando dos aspectos identificados como os mais sensíveis, e a intervenção em sala de aula com diálogo e debate sobre os softwares livres.
