Geology of the Areão Natural Park in João Monlevade (MG) from the perspective of the geoconservation of the quadrilátero ferrífero (iron quadrilateral)

Resumo: | The name of the “Areão” natural park refers to the intensive extraction of sand, which started in the mid-60s and ended in the 90s of the 20th century. However, only in 2012, the Areão Municipal Natural Park was created with an area of 24 hectares, in João Monlevade, Minas Gerais. The purpose of the research was to know the geological nature of the park in a detailed scale. The generated information can then be used for decision-making that aimed at geoconservation in the park region (environmental education, geoscientific diffusion , geoturism, etc.). It was sought to understand the reality of the phenomena, based on qualitative data, that is, descriptive. The work was done in four stage: Bibliographic research; site evaluation; petrographic analysis (mineralogical composition, texture, etc.) In the laboratory and at last, the interpretative phase that alowed to infer what was the stratigraphic framework of the park in the geology of the quadrilátero ferrífero (iron quadrilateral). The lithology that predominates in the outcrops of the central rocky walls of the park is a sericitic quartzite, which tends to become more rusting close to the highest levels. Underlying the quartzites a relatively altered muscovite-schist layer appears These metasedimentary rocks are correlated to the Minas Supergroup, characteristic of quadrilátero ferrífero (iron quadrilateral). Therefore, the park does correspond to an important geoconservation unit representative of the quadrilátero ferrífero (iron quadrilateral). In its geological diversity it is possible to interpret structures and facies deposition, deformation events and other features of the quadrilátero ferrífero (iron quadrilateral). In this context, the recognition of geology can become an important approach towards sustainability. |

Sin embargo, solo en 2012, se créo el Parque Natural Municipal de Areão con una área de 24,4 hectáres, en João Nonlevade, Minas Gerais. El propósito básico de la investigación fue conocer la naturaleza geológica local del parque en una escala detallada. La información generada se puede utilizar a posteriori para tomar decisiones que tengam como objetivo la geoconservación y gestión de actividades sostenibles en la región del parque (educación ambiental, divulgación geocientífica, geoturismo, etc.). Intentamos comprender la realidad de los fenómenos, a partir de datos cualitativos, es decir, descriptivos. El trabajo se resumió en cuatro fases: Investigación bibliográfica: reconocimientos de campo; análisis petrográfico (composición mineralógica, textura, etc.) en el laboratorio y finalmente, la fase interpretativa que permitió inferir el marco estratigráfico del parque en la geología del quadrilátero ferrífero (cuadrilátero de hierro). La litología que predomina en los afloramientos de las paredes centrales del parque es una cuarcita sericítica, que tiende a oxidarse más cerca de los niveles más altos. Subyacente a las cuarcitas aparece una capa de esquisto de moscovita relativamente alterada. Estas rocas metasedimentares están correlacionadas con el Supergrupo Minas, característico del cuadrilátero. Se concluye que el parque corresponde a una importante unidad de geoconservación representativa del quadrilátero ferrífero (cuadrilátero de hierro). En su diversidad geológica, es posible interpretar esctructuras de deposición y facies, eventos de deformación y otras características típicas del cuadrilátero. En este contexto, el reconocimiento de la geología puede convertirse en un enfoque importante hacia la sostenibilidad.O nome do parque natural do “Areão” remete à intensiva extração de areia, iniciada em meados da década de 60 e finalizada nos anos 90 do século XX. No entanto, somente em 2012, foi criado o Parque Natural Municipal do Areão com área de 24,4 hectares, em João Monlevade, Minas Gerais. O intuito básico da pesquisa foi conhecer a natureza geológica local do parque em escala de detalhe. As informações geradas poderão ser utilizadas a posteriori para tomadas de decisão que tenham como objetivo a geoconservação e gestão de atividades de cunho sustentável na região do parque (educação ambiental, divulgação geocientífica, geoturismo etc). Buscou-se compreender a realidade dos fenômenos, com base em dados qualitativos, ou seja, descritivos. O trabalho foi delineado em quatro fases: Pesquisa bibliográfica; reconhecimentos de campo; análise petrográfica (composição mineralógica, textura, etc) em laboratório e por último, a fase interpretativa que permitiu inferir o enquadramento estratigráfico do parque na geologia do quadrilátero ferrífero. A litologia que predomina nos afloramentos dos paredões centrais do parque é um quartzito sericítico, que tende a ficar mais ferruginoso próximo às cotas mais elevadas. Subjacente aos quartzitos aparece uma camada de muscovita-xisto relativamente alterada. Essas rochas metasedimentares são correlacionáveis ao Supergrupo Minas, característico do quadrilátero. Conclui-se que o parque corresponde sim a uma importante unidade de geoconservação representativa do quadrilátero ferrífero. Em sua diversidade geológica é possível interpretar estruturas e fácies de deposição, eventos de deformação e outras feições típicas do quadrilátero.
