Resumo: | Fine roots are all those with a diameter ≤2 mm. These roots are responsible for a significant portion of the primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems, being important for providing resources to the soil microbial community and for influencing the cycling of carbon and nutrients. Despite their recognized importance, fine roots are commonly neglected in plant biomass studies. Root biomass studies are generally limited throughout the world, mainly due to the methodological complexity involved in the analytical processes. The objective of this work was to carry out a review of studies on the topic of roots, addressing the development of technologies in the analytical process and the importance of this dynamic biomass component in ecosystem processes related to carbon cycling and soil nutrients. We emphasize here the importance and need for new scientific research that seeks to develop methods of analysis, as well as to estimate the underground primary productivity, especially that of fine roots, so that the processes involved in the cycling of carbon and nutrients are better elucidated. |

Estas raíces son responsables de una parte importante de la productividad primaria de los ecosistemas terrestres, siendo importantes para proporcionar recursos a la comunidad microbiana del suelo e influir en el ciclo del carbono y los nutrientes. A pesar de su reconocida importancia, las raíces finas comúnmente se pasan por alto en los estudios de biomasa vegetal. Los estudios de biomasa de raíces son generalmente limitados en todo el mundo, principalmente debido a la complejidad metodológica involucrada en los procesos analíticos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue realizar una revisión de estudios sobre el tema de raíces, abordando el desarrollo de tecnologías en el proceso analítico y la importancia de este componente dinámico de la biomasa en los procesos ecosistémicos relacionados con el ciclo del carbono y los nutrientes del suelo. Resaltamos aquí la importancia y necesidad de nuevas investigaciones científicas que busquen desarrollar métodos de análisis, así como estimar la productividad primaria subterránea, especialmente la de raíces finas, de modo que se puedan dilucidar mejor los procesos involucrados en el ciclo del carbono y los nutrientes.As raízes finas são todas aquelas com diâmetro ≤2 mm. Essas raízes são responsáveis por uma porção significativa da produtividade primária dos ecossistemas terrestres, sendo importantes para o fornecimento de recursos para a comunidade microbiana do solo e por influenciarem na ciclagem de carbono e nutrientes. Apesar da sua reconhecida importância, as raízes finas são comumente negligenciadas em estudos de biomassa vegetal. Os estudos de biomassa radicular são generalizadamente limitados em todo o mundo, principalmente em virtude da complexidade metodológica envolvida nos processos analíticos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão dos estudos sobre a temática de raízes, abordando o desenvolvimento de tecnologias no processo analítico e importância desse componente dinâmico de biomassa nos processos ecossistêmicos relacionados a ciclagem de carbono e nutrientes do solo.
