Impact of oral rehabilitation on the quality of life of total edentulous patients: literature review

Resumo: Oral rehabilitation, through mucous-supported complete dentures or under implants, is an option to restore function and aesthetics to totally edentulous patients. Thus, the present study aimed to carry out a critical review of the literature with the main focus on evaluating the impact of oral rehabilitation on the quality of life of totally edentulous patients. After the search process, fourteen works were selected. Most studies aimed to assess the impact of oral rehabilitation on the quality of life of totally edentulous patients. For this review, literature searches were conducted in the following databases: Medline (Pubmed), Web of Science and Scopus, using the keywords “quality of life”, “mouth rehabilitation” and “edentulous mouth”. The results showed a significant improvement in the oral health-related quality of life of patients after complete denture rehabilitation. On the other hand, implant-supported complete denture rehabilitations showed better efficacy when compared with mucous-supported complete dentures. Therefore, restoring function and aesthetics through oral rehabilitation is of paramount importance to restore people's quality of life.

Por lo tanto, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo realizar una revisión crítica de la literatura con el objetivo principal de evaluar el impacto de la rehabilitación oral en la calidad de vida de los pacientes desdentados totales. Tras el proceso de búsqueda, se seleccionaron catorce obras. La mayoría de los estudios tuvieron como objetivo evaluar el impacto de la rehabilitación oral en la calidad de vida de los pacientes totalmente desdentados. Para esta revisión, se realizaron búsquedas bibliográficas en las siguientes bases de datos: Medline (Via Pubmed), Web of Science y Scopus, utilizando las palabras clave “calidad de vida”, “rehabilitación bucal” y “boca edéntula”. Los resultados mostraron una mejora significativa en la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud oral de los pacientes después de la rehabilitación completa de la dentadura. Por otro lado, las rehabilitaciones con prótesis completas implantosoportadas mostraron una mayor eficacia en comparación con las prótesis completas con soporte mucoso. Por lo tanto, restaurar la función y la estética a través de la rehabilitación oral es de suma importancia para restaurar la calidad de vida de las personas.A reabilitação oral, por meio da prótese total mucossuportada ou sob implantes é uma opção para devolver função e estética aos pacientes edêntulos totais. Assim, o presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar uma revisão crítica da literatura com foco principal em avaliar o impacto da reabilitação oral na qualidade de vida de pacientes edêntulos totais. Após o processo de busca, quatorze trabalhos foram selecionados. A maioria dos estudos tiveram o objetivo de avaliar o impacto da reabilitação oral na qualidade de vida de pacientes edêntulos totais.  Para esta revisão, foram conduzidas pesquisas na literatura nas seguintes bases de dados: Medline (Via Pubmed), Web of Science e Scopus, utilizando as palavras-chave “quality of life”, “mouth rehabilitation” e “edentulous mouth”. Os resultados mostraram uma melhoria significativa na qualidade de vida relacionada a saúde bucal dos pacientes após reabilitação por prótese total. Por outro lado, as reabilitações por próteses totais implantossuportadas mostraram melhor eficácia, quando comparadas com as próteses totais mucossuportadas.
