The epidemiological incidence of malaria in northeastern Brazil (2010-2019): control and challenges for elimination

Resumo: This retrospective epidemiological study aims to describe the confirmed cases of this disease in northeastern Brazil in the period 2010-2019. This is an investigative, documentary research with a quantitative descriptive approach, based on secondary data collection, obtained through SINAN. The total number of confirmed cases in Brazil was 7,457, and the Northeast stood out, 19% (1407), however, there was a significant increase in cases in recent years, 2018 of 127.4% and 2019 of 50%, in relation to the previous year of 2017. Regarding the notification of cases, Piauí reported the highest rate in total, with 30.3%. The population aged 20-39 years (56.6%) was more susceptible, moreover, regarding gender, males presented greater vulnerability to the risk of infection. The cases confirmed according to race, brown color was prevalent, 70% (985) in all. As for diversity, P. vivax 67% (943) followed by P. falciparum 25.6% (361), showed prevalence in all regions, however, it was observed that Piauí 77% (276) had the highest number of cases of notification for the combination of these two species in this period. In this perspective, given the number of cases in this region, it is not possible to raise awareness about the preventive use of antimalarials related to emigration in non-endemic regions and more epidemiological research is required, since its notoriety is still low.

Fue una investigación investigativa, documental, con enfoque cuantitativo descriptivo, a partir de la recolección de datos secundarios, obtenidos a través del SINAN. El total de casos confirmados en Brasil fue de 7.457, destacándose el Nordeste, 19% (1407), sin embargo, hubo un aumento significativo de casos en los últimos años, 2018 de 127,4% y 2019 de 50%, en comparación con el año anterior de 2017. En cuanto a la notificación de casos, Piauí tuvo la tasa más alta en total, con 30,3%. La población de 20 a 39 años (56,6%) fue más susceptible, además, en cuanto al sexo, el sexo masculino fue más vulnerable al riesgo de infección. Casos confirmados según raza, prevaleció el color pardo, 70% (985) en total. En cuanto a la diversidad, P. vivax 67 % (943) seguido de P. falciparum 25,6 % (361) mostró prevalencia en todas las regiones, sin embargo, se observó que Piauí 77% (276) tuvo el mayor número de casos de notificación para la combinación de estas dos especies en ese período. Desde esta perspectiva, dada la cantidad de casos en esta región, la conciencia sobre el uso preventivo de antipalúdicos relacionados con la emigración en regiones no endémicas es fundamental y se puede invertir más en investigación epidemiológica, ya que su notoriedad aún es baja.Este estudo retrospectivo de caráter epidemiológico tem por objetivo descrever os casos confirmados desta enfermidade na região nordeste do Brasil no período de 2010-2019. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa de cunho investigativo, documental, de abordagem descritiva quantitativa, baseada em coletas de dados secundários, obtidos através do SINAN. O total de casos confirmados no Brasil foi de 7.457, e o Nordeste destacou-se, 19% (1407), no entanto, houve um aumento significativo dos casos nos últimos anos, 2018 de 127,4% e 2019 de 50%, em relação ao ano antecedente de 2017. Referente à notificação de casos, o Piauí denotou o maior índice no total, apresentando 30,3%. A população com idade de 20-39 anos (56,6%) se mostrou mais susceptível, ademais, referente ao gênero, o sexo masculino apresentou maior vulnerabilidade ao risco de infecção. Os casos confirmados de acordo com a raça, a cor parda foi prevalente, 70% (985) ao todo. Quanto à diversidade, o Plasmodium vivax 67 % (943) seguida do P. falciparum 25.6 % (361), apresentou prevalência em todas as regiões, entretanto, observou-se que o Piauí 77% (276) teve o maior número de casos de notificação para a combinação dessas duas espécies nesse período.
