Addressing the impact of environmental noise in public schools in the city of Minas Gerais

Resumo: | He noise pollution, followed by water and air pollution, is the environmental problem that affects a greater number of people on the planet, which leads to the search for measures of sound attenuation to avoid the negative effects that may cause in human health. Exposure to noise at levels above the recommended can cause changes in school activities, such as loss of concentration, insomnia, stress, among others. These symptoms may interfere with the ability to perform tasks, thus compromising the school performance. This study aimed to evaluate the acoustic conditions in classrooms of two schools in the city of João Monlevade, Minas Gerais, selected according to the geographic location, being both schools of the state public education network. In addition, the investigation shows the effects of these noises on the day to day of the school community. Acoustic measurements were made inside the classrooms in order to determine the level of noise to which students and teachers are exposed in their daily lives. Subsequently, a questionnaire was applied with the purpose of obtaining information on the knowledge of the theme and on the health of the school community. Finally, a lecture was given to students and teachers of schools, with the aim of bringing information about noise pollution and their impacts on human and environmental health. As for the results, the intensity of the sound pressure level collected in the schools was excessively above the recommended, with perceptible consequences for its users. |

La exposición al ruido a niveles por encima de lo recomendado puede causar cambios en las actividades escolares, como pérdida de concentración, insomnio, estrés, entre otras. Estos síntomas pueden interferir en la capacidad de realización de tareas, comprometiendo así el rendimiento escolar. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar las condiciones acústicas en aulas de dos escuelas de la ciudad de João Monlevade, Minas Gerais, seleccionadas de acuerdo con la ubicación geográfica, siendo ambas escuelas de la red pública estatal de enseñanza. Además, la investigación muestra los efectos de estos ruidos en el día a día de la comunidad escolar. Se realizaron audiciones acústicas en el interior de las aulas, a fin de determinar el nivel de ruido al que los estudiantes y profesores están expuestos en su cotidiano. Posteriormente, se aplicó un cuestionario con el propósito de obtener informaciones sobre el conocimiento del tema y sobre la salud de la comunidad escolar. Por último, se pronunció una conferencia para los estudiantes y profesores de las escuelas, con el fin de llevar informaciones sobre contaminación acústica y sus impactos en la salud humana y ambiental. En cuanto a los resultados, la intensidad del nivel de presión sonora recogida en las escuelas fue excesivamente por encima de lo recomendado, con consecuencias perceptibles para sus usuarios.A poluição sonora, seguida da poluição da água e do ar, é a problemática ambiental que afeta um maior número de pessoas no planeta, o que leva à busca de medidas de atenuação sonora para evitar os efeitos negativos que podem vir a causar na saúde humana. A exposição ao ruído a níveis acima do recomendado pode causar alterações nas atividades escolares, como perda de concentração, insônia, estresse, dentre outras. Esses sintomas podem interferir na capacidade de realização de tarefas, comprometendo, assim, o rendimento escolar. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as condições acústicas em salas de aula de duas escolas da cidade de João Monlevade, Minas Gerais, selecionadas de acordo com a localização geográfica, sendo ambas escolas da rede pública estadual de ensino. Além disso, a investigação mostra os efeitos desses ruídos no dia a dia da comunidade escolar. Foram realizadas aferições acústicas no interior das salas de aula, a fim de determinar o nível de ruído a que os estudantes e professores estão expostos no seu cotidiano. Posteriormente, foi aplicado um questionário com o propósito de obter informações sobre o conhecimento do tema e sobre a saúde da comunidade escolar. Por fim, foi proferida uma palestra para os estudantes e professores das escolas, com o intuito de levar informações sobre poluição sonora e seus impactos na saúde humana e ambiental.
