Nutritional status assessment of children of a municipal school in Campina Grande-Paraíba

Resumo: This study has the objective to evaluate the nutritional state of 4-10-years-old children who attend a certain a public school in Campina Grande, Paraíba, through the parameters of the Body Mass Index (BMI) - also known as Weight-for-Height Index- Weight-for-Age and Height-for-Age Indexes. This paper presents a field research, with descriptive nature and exploratory quality, which has used quantitative methods of research. Its sample was constituted by 33.3% of the population in study, considered sufficiently representative, corresponding to 50 children of both sexes at 4-10 years old, who attend a certain public school. During the data collect, these children were drove to a reserved room at their school, in which the anthropometry took place. The collected data were analysed through the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) database, using the twenty-second version of parameters for Weight-for-Height, Weight-for-Age and Height-for-Age Indexes. Later, its results were interpreted based on the standard scores of growth, previosly mentioned, and compared to the nutritional status table from WHO. It was verified that according to the Height-for-Age parameter, 92% of the children presented proper height for age (n=46), while 8% (n=4) presented low height for age. In relation to the Weight-for-Height parameter, 8% of children presented thinness for height; 40% (n=20) presented eutrophy; and 52% (n=26) of children presented overweight for height. In regard to the Weight-for-Age parameter, 12% (n=7) of children were found underweight for age; 62% (n=31) on proper weight for age; and 24% (n= 12) overweight for age. To measure up the nutritional status of children is extremely important, for it makes possible to evaluate their real nutritional needs for age, as well as their development in a crucial phase in which their mental and physiological maturation happens, along with other many alterations.

Esta es una investigación de campo, de naturaleza descriptiva y exploratoria, utilizando el método cuantitativo. La muestra estaba compuesta por el 33,3% de la población, ya que se considera una muestra representativa, correspondiente a 50 niños de ambos sexos, con edades comprendidas entre 4 y 10 años y matriculados en la escuela municipal. El día de la recolección de datos, los niños fueron asignados a una habitación privada donde se realizó la antropometría. Los datos recogidos se analizaron utilizando la base de datos de la plataforma estadística para las ciencias sociales (SPSS) en la versión 22 de los parámetros de IMC para edad, peso para la edad, estatura para la edad, luego se interpretaron en base a las tablas de crecimiento y se identificaron en las tablas. de diagnóstico nutricional de la OMS. Se encontró que en el parámetro Estatura para la edad, los niños con estatura apropiada para la edad, correspondiente al 92% (n = 46). En el diagnóstico de baja estatura por edad, presentó 8% (n=4). El parámetro de IMC para la edad, 8% (n=4) indicó delgadez; en el diagnóstico de eutrofia presentado 40% (n = 20); el sobrepeso alcanzo un total del 52% (n = 26). En el parámetro Peso para la edad, el 12% (n = 7) tenía menor peso para la edad; el peso adecuado para la edad fue del 62% (n = 31) y alto peso elevado del 24% (n = 12). Acompañar el estado nutricional de los niños es extremamente importante, ya que permite evaluar el estado nutricional real para su edad, así como su desarrollo en una fase que produce muchos cambios y maduración fisiológica y mental.O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o estado nutricional de crianças de 4 a 10 anos de idade em uma Escola municipal de Campina Grande-Paraíba, através dos parâmetros Índice de Massa Corpórea (IMC) para Idade, Peso para Idade (P/I) e Estatura para Idade (E/I). Trata-se de uma pesquisa de campo, de natureza descritiva e caráter exploratório tendo como abordagem o método quantitativo. A amostra foi composta por 33,3% da população, por ser considerado uma amostra representativa, correspondendo a 50 crianças de ambos os sexos, entre a faixa etária de 4 a 10 anos e matriculados na escola municipal. No dia da coleta dos dados as crianças foram destinadas a uma sala reservada, no qual foi realizada a antropometria. Os dados coletados foram analisados através do banco de dados da plataforma SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) na versão 22 dos parâmetros de IMC para Idade, Peso para Idade, Estatura para Idade posteriormente interpretados com base nos gráficos de crescimento e identificados pelas tabelas de diagnóstico nutricional da OMS. Verificou-se que no parâmetro Estatura para Idade, as crianças com estatura adequada para idade, correspondendo 92% (n=46). No diagnóstico de baixa estatura para a idade, apresentou 8% (n=4). O parâmetro de IMC para Idade, 8% (n=4) indicou magreza; no diagnóstico de eutrofia apresentaram 40% (n=20); de excesso de peso totalizou 52% (n=26). No parâmetro de Peso para Idade, 12% (n=7) apresentaram peso inferior para a idade; no peso adequado para a idade apresentou 62% (n=31), e de peso elevado para a idade 24% (n=12).
