Relationship of nutritional status and level of physical activity among institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the relationship of nutritional status with the level of physical activity of institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly. Method: This is a cross-sectional study. The sample size is 245 institutionalized and 105 socially active elderlies, non- institutionalized, assisted in a Family Healt Strategy, from Rio Grande do Sul. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire, short version, and a structured questionnaire with variables about name, age, gender, current weight, and height was used. Nutritional status was classified according to the Pan American Health Organization (2002). Epi Info 7.2 software was used to analyze the results that were considered significant at a maximum significance level of 5%. Results: The obesity the level of active physical activity, very active and the age group from 60 to 69 years old have become significantly for the non-instituonalizes elderly and for underweight sedentary physical activity level and age of 80 years  and over to institutionalized elderly (p≤0.01). Low weight was significantly associated with the elderlies with sedentary level of physical activity and obesity at the active and very active level (p≤0.01) Conclusion: The most non-institutionalized elderly were obese, active physical activity level or very active and were 60 to 69 years old, while institutionalized elderly were underweight or eutrophy or overweight, sedentary and aged 80 or over. Obese elderly people practiced more physical activity compared to those classified as underweight.

Método: Estudio del tipo transversal. Se trata de una muestra con 245 mayores institucionalizados y 105 no institucionalizados, socialmente activos atendidos en una Estratégia de Salud de la Família en el estado de Rio Grande do Sul. Se utilizó el Cuestionario Internacional de Actividad Física versión corta y un cuestionario estructurado con variables sobre nombre, edad, sexo, peso actual, altura. Fue clasificada la situación nutricional conforme la Organización Pan-americana de Salud (2002). Se utilizó el software Epi Info 7.2 para análisis de los resultados que fueron considerados significativos a un nivel de significación máximo de 5%. Resultados. La obesidad y el nivel de actividad física activo y muy activo se asociaron considerablemente a los mayores socialmente activos y el grupo etario de 60 a 69 años se associaron significativamente con los mayores no institucionalizados con bajo peso, sobrepeso y nivel de actividad física sedentario y edad de 60 años o más a los mayores institucionalizados (p≤0,01). El bajo peso se asoció considerablemente a los mayores con nivel de actividad física sedentario y la obesidad al nivel activo  y muy activo (p≤0,01). Conclusión: La mayoría de los mayores no institucionalizados eran obesos, tenían actividad física activa o muy activa y tenían entre 60 y 69 años, mientras que los institucionalizados presentaban bajo peso o eutrofia o sobrepeso, tenían sedentarismo y edad de 80 años o más. Los mayores obesos practican más actividad física en comparación con los clasificados con bajo peso.Objetivo: Avaliar a relação do estado nutricional com o nível de atividade física de idosos institucionalizados e não institucionalizados. Método: Estudo transversal, realizado com uma amostra de 245 idosos residentes em Instituições de Longa Permanência e 105 idosos socialmente ativos, não institucionalizados, atendidos em uma Estratégia de Saúde da Família, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Utilizou-se o Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física versão curta e um questionário estruturado com variáveis sobre idade, sexo, peso atual e altura. Classificou-se o estado nutricional conforme Organização Pan-americana de Saúde (2002). Utilizou-se o software Epi Info 7.2 e os resultados foram considerados significativos a um nível de significância máximo de 5%. Resultados: A obesidade, o nível de atividade física ativo, muito ativo e a faixa etária de 60 a 69 anos associaram-se significativamente aos idosos não institucionalizados e o baixo peso, eutrofia, sobrepeso, nível de atividade física sedentário e idade de 80 anos ou mais aos idosos institucionalizados (p≤0,01). O baixo peso associou-se significativamente aos idosos com nível de atividade física sedentários e a obesidade ao nível ativo e muito ativo. (p≤0,01). Conclusão: A maioria dos idosos não institucionalizados apresentava-se com obesidade, nível de atividade física ativo ou muito ativo e tinham de 60 a 69 anos, enquanto os institucionalizados estavam em baixo peso ou eutrofia ou sobrepeso, sedentário e com 80 anos ou mais.
