Seasonality in mammalian reproduction: a review

Resumo: Some factors related to the external environment directly or indirectly influence the animals, causing them to exhibit specific characteristics in their reproductive physiology. Among the environmental variables, there is the daily photoperiod, which allows classifying the seasonal species in short- day animals (buffaloes and small ruminants) and long-day (horses). Thus, in these species the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis is modulated by the action of melatonin that is released in concentrations proportional to light intensity. Melatonin influences the release direct of GnRH and indirect of gonadotropins (FSH and LH), as well as gametogenesis influence, the synthesis of sex hormones and sexual behavior. The aim of this review is to evaluate the influence of photoperiod on reproductive physiology, analyzing the effects of circadian rhythm and the physiological aspects of melatonin in the regulation and modulation of animal reproduction.

Entre las variables ambientales destaca el fotoperiodo diario, que permite clasificar las especies estacionales en animales de día corto (pequeños rumiantes y búfalos) y de día largo (equinos). Así, en estas especies, el funcionamiento del eje hipotalámico-pituitario-gonadal está modulado por la acción de la melatonina, que se libera en concentraciones proporcionales a la intensidad de la luz. La melatonina influye en la liberación directa de GnRH y gonadotropinas indirectas (FSH y LH), además de influir en la gametogénesis, la síntesis de hormonas sexuales y los comportamientos sexuales. El objetivo de esta revisión es abordar la influencia del fotoperíodo en la fisiología reproductiva, analizando los efectos del ritmo circadiano y los aspectos fisiológicos de la melatonina en la regulación y modulación de la reproducción animal.Alguns fatores relacionados ao ambiente externo influenciam direta ou indiretamente os animais, fazendo com que eles apresentem características específicas em sua fisiologia reprodutiva. Dentre as variáveis ambientais, destaca-se o fotoperíodo diário, que permite classificar as espécies sazonais em animais de dia curto (pequenos ruminantes e bubalinos) e de dia longo (equinos). Assim, nessas espécies o funcionamento do eixo hipotálamo-hipófise-gonadal é modulado pela atuação da melatonina que é liberada em concentrações proporcionais a intensidade luminosa. A melatonina influencia a liberação direta do GnRH e indireta de gonadotrofinas (FSH e LH), assim como, influencia a gametogênese, síntese de hormônios sexuais e os comportamentos sexuais.
