The micronucleus test as a teaching tool in schools

Resumo: Mutation is a topic rarely addressed in high schools, due to factors such as the complexity of understanding the content. However, this theme is of great importance in broad biological processes, as it serves as a starting point for different discussions such as environmental health, genetics and evolution. As a teaching possibility, the development of experimental protocols that are easy to apply is considered a tool that helps in the articulation of abstract contents. Therefore, the objective of this work was to describe an experimental methodology to assist in the teaching of mutation in schools. As a methodology, the practice was formulated from the adaptation of the micronucleus test, widely used in the area of mutagenesis. The adaptation sought to use materials and methods easily accessible to teachers from the basic network. As a result, the adaptation of the micronucleus assay was applied to high school students and obtained promising results in a school located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Among the results, it should be highlighted the basic notions of what mutations are and the problem of an unhealthy environment in relation to the mutagenesis process. It was concluded that the micronucleus assay in schools proved to be a practical alternative for discussions about mutation in schools. However, further studies are needed to develop tools and elucidate the importance of discussing the topic in basic education.

Sin embargo, este tema es de gran importancia en los procesos biológicos generales, ya que sirve como punto de partida para diferentes debates, como la salud ambiental, la genética y la evolución. Como una posibilidad de enseñanza, el desarrollo de protocolos experimentales que son fáciles de aplicar se considera una herramienta que ayuda en la articulación de contenidos abstractos. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este trabajo fue describir una metodología experimental para ayudar en la enseñanza de la mutación en las escuelas. Como metodología, la práctica se formuló a partir de la adaptación de la prueba de micronúcleos, ampliamente utilizada en el área de la mutagénesis. La adaptación buscó utilizar materiales y métodos fácilmente accesibles para los maestros desde la red básica. Como resultado, la adaptación del ensayo de micronúcleos se aplicó a estudiantes de secundaria y obtuvo resultados prometedores en una escuela ubicada en el estado de Rio Grande do Sul. Entre los resultados, se deben destacar las nociones básicas de qué son las mutaciones y el problema de un entorno poco saludable en relación con el proceso de mutagénesis. Se concluyó que el ensayo de micronúcleos en las escuelas demostró ser una alternativa práctica para las discusiones sobre la mutación en las escuelas. Sin embargo, se necesitan más estudios para desarrollar herramientas y dilucidar la importancia de discutir el tema en la educación básicaA mutação é um tema pouco abordado em escolas de ensino médio, devido a fatores como a complexidade de compreensão do conteúdo. Como possibilidade de ensino, o desenvolvimento de protocolos experimentais de fácil aplicação é considerado uma ferramenta que auxilia na articulação de conteúdos abstratos. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever uma metodologia experimental para auxiliar no ensino da mutação nas escolas. Como metodologia a prática formulou-se a partir da adaptação do teste de micronúcleo, muito utilizado na área de mutagênese. A adaptação buscou utilizar materiais e métodos de fácil acesso a professores da rede básica.  Como resultado a adaptação do ensaio de micronúcleo foi aplicada em estudantes do ensino médio e obteve resultados promissores em uma escola localizada no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Entre os resultados, deve-se salientar as noções básicas do que são as mutações e a problemática de um ambiente não saudável em relação ao processo de mutagênese.  Concluiu-se que o ensaio de micronúcleo nas escolas demonstrou ser uma alternativa prática para discussões sobre mutação em escolas.
